Research cited in the report 'Now the whole school is reading’: supporting struggling readers in secondary school - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)' highlights that initiatives aimed at fostering a reading culture and promoting reading for pleasure significantly boost struggling readers' motivation and enthusiasm for reading.

At Priory, we are dedicated to cultivating a strong reading culture and ensuring that every pupil becomes a proficient reader. A key component of this is our Everybody Reading initiative. Throughout the year, we will designate a specific time slot in Years 7-10 when all four Learning for Life (L4L) sessions are reserved exclusively for reading. During these sessions, pupils in Years 7-10 will engage with a class reader alongside their tutor, allowing us to place a greater emphasis on reading development. Year 11 will also receive time throughout the year to read a range of short stories and non-fiction articles spanning a range of subjects.

To support comprehension during these sessions, teachers employ reciprocal reading strategies such as questioning, clarifying, summarising, and predicting. They model decoding techniques, help pupils read familiar words by sight, and demonstrate fluent reading through accuracy, pace, and expression. As is the standard approach in English, Pupils will use a ruler to guide their reading, helping them stay focused and track the text more accurately. By employing all of these methods, teachers provide pupils with the tools that skilled readers use, helping to further enhance reading fluency and comprehension skills.

These are the books that we have chosen to read with pupils:
