'Bounce' The of Myth of Talent and the Power of Practice by Matthew Syed

Not normally one for non-fiction, this month's recommendation from Mrs Elliott is for parents 'Bounce' by Matthew Syed.

If you're of a mind that some people are just 'gifted' or 'born with innate talent', or if you hear yourself or others saying "I just can't do maths (or English or science...you get the idea) then this book will help you debunk your views and revisit the idea of potential!

An Olympic level table tennis player (and writer), Syed approaches most of the ideas around the theme of sport but his thinking applies to all aspects of our lives.  He forces us to reconsider some deeply ingrained beliefs and addresses some important questions:  'Can we really ALL be the best?  Is the idea of innate ability holding us back?  Could the ability to fail - and then get over it - be fundamental to success?'

So, if you love football, cricket, singing, music etc but just don't believe you have the true talent to achieve, read the book and think again.  But be ready to put in some really hard graft if you really want to achieve your dream.
