Astronomy Club is recruiting Year 9 for optional GCSE

The Science Department is once again reaching for the stars as it looks to sign up Year 9s to start their Astronomy GCSE course.
 
Science technician, Mr Evans, teaches the GCSE Astronomy course which will run every Tuesday after school for the new Year 9 group.  (Year 10 will continue their lessons on Thursday as previous)

Astronomy Club is an optional extra curricular subject that is open to Year 9 pupils who continue through to Year 10, when they may opt to take a GCSE.

Introductory letters are available from the Science department or can be downloaded from the school website at  www.priory.lancs.sch.uk/parents/letters. 

Classes will run after school until 4.10pm during term time. 

Pupils will study a range of topics including:

Cosmology | Stellar evolution | Exploring starlight | Planetary motion and gravity

Mr Evans said: “There is coursework and an exam and, I will be honest, it is quite tough – a few people start it and drop out. It is an enjoyable course to teach though and a lot of pupils thoroughly enjoy it.”

Year 10 Freya said: “I wanted to do an extra GCSE and I find Astronomy interesting. I knew it would be hard, there is a lot of maths and there is quite a lot of information you learn which you don’t learn in science. Doing a GCSE a year early is good practise for Year 11.”

Year 11 Thomas said: “I took Astronomy as it’s an extra GCSE and I found space interesting, how insignificant but unique we are! It is difficult but I have managed to stay with it.  I would say to a Year 9 if you are smart enough, go for it.”
