Year 7 went off-timetable on Friday to celebrate the European Day of Languages, an important day in the Languages Department's calendar where we highlight the importance of learning a language across Europe.

There were numerous activities including Greek crafts and flag making, constructing a European landmark using straws, a café and quiz, and a music special led by Mr Taylor. Pupils also got to sample various Greek delicacies, whilst in PE Mr Bullock started the pupils off on a game of handball.

Head of Languages Mrs Scully said: “This day is so important and everyone, from staff to pupils, have been so enthusiastic about it.

“Days like this are vital to highlight the importance of learning a different language, and culture, which are on our doorstep and all the school have embraced it.

“It raises the profile of languages and it was great to see the teachers get involved too. We tried to incorporate a European language in many different ways we could think of; the pupils have got a lot from the day.”

Pupils embraced building a European monument out of straws, with the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa proving popular, under the watchful eye of Mrs Bailey.

Mrs Bailey said: “The pupils have been so enthusiastic, they have had a great time and it’s got them thinking about European countries.”

"The winning monuments were outstanding. This year we also saw the Louvre, the London Eye and Big Ben amongst the more common structures. We certainly have some very creative Year 7s who worked extremely hard!"

Mr Taylor’s music class had maracas, drums, cymbals and more as they played and danced to the French football anthem ‘Ramenez la Coupe à la Maison’

Mr Bullock gave the pupils a run around in the Sports Hall with a game of Handball, one of the most popular sports across Europe

Many pupils brought in language and European-themed cakes which were sold off for Macmillan’s at break, raising money for the charity's annual 'Coffee Morning' cancer support campaign.  Please don't forget to collect your containers from the Food Tech room if not done so already.

We have some tremendous bakers and we are really grateful to those that took the time to bake cake donations. Names have been noted and all entries will be awarded house points.  Prizes for the best effort go to: Max F, Isla S, Archie H and Zachery B.

We are pleased to announce that we raised £182 for Macmillan’s.

Thank you too to our Year 11 helpers: Max B, Imogen H, Sophia T, Chloe W, Emily P, Navah T, Jolie T, Summer W, Charlotte M, Indy J, Geetha D, Ella G Connie B,  Darcey K, Kaycee M.
