Pupils have once again got creative for the annual Geography Contours Competition.

Year 7 was given a project to create a 3D contour model of a landscape, combining creativity and hands-on learning. Guided by their geography teachers, each class explored the intricacies of topographic maps and translated them into physical form.

Using layers of cardboard, foam and other craft resources, pupils had carefully cut and stacked pieces to replicate the natural contours of hills, valleys, and plateaus.

The finished models will be displayed in the Humanities department, serving as a testament to the pupils’ hard work and a resource for future lessons.

Geography teacher, Mr Momoniat said, “This project was set as a creative step in making geography lessons interactive and memorable for the pupils”.

He added, “First place Sophie L used wood and polystyrene to create a model featuring a stunning waterfall, inspired by the book Kensuke’s Kingdom. She told me she enjoyed the hands-on process of building it herself.”

Meanwhile, second place Lois J worked with wood to highlight the contrast between 2D and 3D representations. Her motivation came from earning a ‘Geography’ pin badge and support from her mum. She credits her enthusiasm to the inspiration provided by Mr Momoniat.

In third place, Amelie Rose T crafted her model from plastic, showcasing intricate map keys. Her idea stemmed from Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain ride, with a sweet reward of chocolate making the experience fun too!

All three pupils take home a much sought-after Geography badge, a box of chocolates and winner, Sophie was also awarded with an Amazon voucher.
