For a second year, Priory was honoured to be invited to participate in South Ribble’s Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations.

Held at the Leyland Civic Centre on Monday, 27 January, Mr Eccles and Mr Taylor accompanied a select group of Year 11 pupils to the community event.

DaMari S was asked to light a candle which represented the victims of Nazi Persecution between 1933 and 1945, and Head Prefect, Navah delivered a reading.  Emily J and Kayleigh I then performed a stunning rendition of ‘Lean On Me’ as part of the musical programme for the afternoon.

Lead Teacher of History, Mr Eccles, said, “The pupils were praised by the organiser who commented that their presence and contributions helped to “make the event very special.””

Justina Ma, Strategic Partnerships Officer, for South Ribble Borough Council added, “I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you for supporting our event yesterday. The girls are so talented and sang beautifully. I do hope they are very proud of their performance as it really helped to make the event very special and please do let them know we received a lot of complimentary feedback about them from our guests and wider colleagues.”

This year’s HMD marked the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own – it’s a steady process which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. There is still much to do to create a safer future and HMD is an opportunity to start this process.

‘For a better future.’
