Mrs Gidden's cool readers club - Darcy
21 January 2019
Priory’s Head of English, Mrs Gidden, has been really impressed with many of our multi-talented pupils lately and wanted to highlight their love of reading while excelling at other pursuits.
This week we interviewed Year 8 pupil, Darcy.
Darcy has her feet on the ground - but hopes to be flying high as a ballet dancer!
Darcy loves reading award-winning author John Green and has just started ‘The Fault in our Stars’, about Hazel who has terminal lung cancer. She meets Augustus Waters at a Cancer Kids Support Group and love, sadness and romance follow.
“It’s really good so far, I read every day and enjoy it as it’s a distraction from everything else which is going on,” said Darcy.
“I get absorbed in books. I aim to read one million words in the Accelerated Reader Programme.”
As well as reading, Darcy loves ballet and has attended the Sandham Fitchett Performing Arts School since September.
“I go every Saturday for three hours,” said Darcy. “I started with street dance and I wanted to do shows, so I took ballet lessons and realised how much I enjoyed it.
“I do ballet as well as tap and modern dancing now. I have just done my Grade Four exam in ballet and moved up a level.
“I would love to take part in ballets on the big stage. I was in Peter Pan at the Charter Theatre over the summer and loved it.
“It was hard learning the routines as we had four dances to learn but it was so much fun and I want to do it again.”
Darcy is busy as she is also learning sign language:
“If I can’t be a professional dancer or actress, I would like to be a sign language interpreter. I decided to try it and have been learning from home, from apps and video clips.
