Priory’s Head of English, Mrs Gidden, has been really impressed with many of our multi-talented pupils lately and wanted to highlight their love of reading while excelling at other pursuits.

This week we interviewed Year 11 pupil, Niamh.

Niamh is one of Mrs Gidden’s Cool Readers – but she has to find time to read as she is so busy with her volunteer work with the charity Barnardo’s as well as studying for her GCSEs.

Niamh, spends four hours every Thursday and seven hours on a Saturday volunteering at Barnardo’s at Lostock Hall.

“My little brother Alfie had a stroke when he was born and we were told that he may not be able to walk or talk, they didn’t know how it would affect him as he got older.  Thankfully he can do everything, in fact we can’t shut him up!

“I decided though I wanted to help children who may need it, it shaped my future, as I also have two disabled cousins.

“I want to be a paediatrician and will hopefully study Health & Social Care at Preston’s College.

“At Barnardo’s, I do things like organise group baking activities, I help with school work and other activities It’s extremely rewarding.”

Niamh is currently reading ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding.

“I have only just started it but it does seem gruesome. I do like horror stories. I read a lot and am enthusiastic about it.

“We are studying Blood Brothers, Christmas Carol and Macbeth for our GCSE English Literature so I am revising as well!”
