Mrs Gidden's Cool Readers Club - Preston
3 October 2019
Priory’s Head of English, Mrs Gidden, has been really impressed with many of our multi-talented pupils and wanted to highlight their love of reading while excelling at other pursuits.
This week we interviewed Year 7 pupil, Preston.
Preston is reading two advanced novels - and it has improved his writing vocabulary as a result!
He is currently deeply involved in two books: “I am reading Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien.
“I started Lord of the Rings at home and then I started reading Northern Lights in the school library. My friend Samuel and I are both planning to read Phillip Pullman’s Dark Materials trilogy at the same time then we can both discuss it.
“My favourite book is the Earthsea trilogy by Ursula K Le Guin. They are a bit like Harry Potter as they are about wizards.
“It’s based on every spell you cast has a consequence so if you asked for rain, it would stop raining somewhere else.
“The lead character in the first one is a boy called Ged who tried to bring someone back from the dead and it backfired and now he has released a shadow which looks like himself and he has to try and defeat it.”
Preston’s favourite subject in school is Maths and he also goes to the Art Club on Mondays.
“I also take part in dancing every Saturday at PM’s Dance Club, with Latin, ballroom and hip hop. It’s fun.”
Preston’s dream is to own his own restaurant. “I can cook a bit and when I was younger I loved watching my mum cook. I watch Masterchef and Bake Off and I enjoy them so that’s where the idea of a restaurant came from!”
