This is the first of a series of articles where we get to know our trainee teachers.  Trainee teachers attend two placements in the academic year so are with us either from September to Christmas or January to June. They initially observe then start to take over sections of lessons, leading to being in charge of several classes by the time they finish their placement with us. Along with assignments and studies in pedagogy, they work towards their Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the summer term.

This week, we interviewed someone who was so inspired by the school, her colleagues and our pupils that she decided to give up her day job as Priory's Technology Technician to train to become a teacher.  After leaving Priory at the end of the summer term, we were delighted to have Miss Higginson back with us in the Technology Department this September.

Meet The Teacher - Miss Higginson (Technology)

What made you want to become a teacher?

Both my parents were teachers so it is something I considered but initially I became a graphic designer/illustrator. I started my own business, which I still have. I design greeting cards, gift wrap, canvas prints, wallpaper, mugs, accessories and much more.  I write and illustrate my own children's picture books and have just completed a Masters in Children’s Book Illustration. I also love textiles and have my own business creating teddy bears. Last year I started as a Technology Technician at Priory and I just loved working with the pupils so much, I decided to train as a teacher in order to share my knowledge and professional experience; hopefully encouraging the children to indulge in their creative journey and inspire Design, Technology and Art based career ambitions!

What do you like about your placement at Priory?

I already feel settled here, I love the environment, the culture and the ethos. I love working with the children and the staff  here. There is an energetic and friendly vibe across the school and it's a really positive working environment!

What's the hardest thing about your job?

It’s a busy role and I have a young family so it can be hard juggling everything at times but I love it so much, I just embrace it all.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy creating new designs for my website www.anyaillustrates.com. I also love cooking cuisines from all around the world. I enjoy playing the piano and reached grade 8. I also love spending time with my family - hiking in the Lake District, travelling and walking our dog!
