Year 10 pupils experience the world of work
30 March 2025
Year 10 pupils ventured into the ‘real’ world before the February half term break to spend a week in jobs for their work experience.
There were a variety of roles, from a job in a football agency, a week at a vets as well as one pupil observing train drivers!
Head of Year 10, Mrs Eastham, is Priory’s work experience co-ordinator and said “Our Year 10 pupils spent a week in various different career sectors developing transferable skills, such as communicating and teamwork; building confidence when interacting with adults, finding inspiration for future careers, amongst many other worthwhile skills to help our pupils develop their employability.
Amelia went to Longridge Vets. She said: “I loved it. I want to be a veterinary nurse and I sat in a lot of surgeries, some of which weren’t too pleasant!
“It was a productive week and has made me want to be a veterinary nurse even more.”
Chloe went to John Robson Metals. “My dad works there and I found it interesting. They crush metals and also work alongside the National Grid and other companies.
“I worked in different departments there, in the offices and on-site. I liked on-site best and that’s something I may look at in the future.”
Charlie worked on Transpennine Trains. “My dad is a train driver and so I got to travel around the north. We were never in the same place.
“The trains go around 80-100 mph and 15mph when switching train tracks. I learnt a lot about how trains run and it was interesting.
“It’s something I will consider in the future but I am also considering a career as a pilot.”
Junaid worked at the National Grid. He said: “The school has links with the National Grid so I had an interview and was accepted.
“It was good – we climbed to near the top of a pylon which I didn’t like as I have a fear of heights! I want to go into more of the engineering side.”
Phoebe loved her time at Penwortham Primary School. “I want to work in a school so I enjoyed it. I was in Pre-school so I was holding activities with children age 3-4. It’s definitely something I want to go into.”
Hannah aims to be a physio and spent time at Jemma Oliver Physiotherapy. “I did some of the stretch classes and home visits. I have wanted to be a physio since Year 5/6 and, after a week doing it, it’s made me want to do it even more.”
Leevi’s ambition is to be a boxer so he hopes his week at Lancashire School of Boxing is his future.
“I basically trained all week which was brilliant. I got up, went on a run, helped staff move things around in the gym and did more training at night. It was good fun but I was tired after a week!”
Shawn went to Ashbridge Independent School.
“My mum works in the nursery there and I spent the week in the primary school, helping with PE and other lessons.”
Alex spent a week at Tesco stacking shelves.
“It was ok. It’s not something I want to do in the future but I didn’t mind it.”
Hiylie spent the week at CAA Stellar, a world-leading sports agency. “I got this through my mum’s boyfriend and I listened to a lot of contract negotiations and a lot of talk about money! I want to go into acting.”
Mrs Eastham, concluded by saying:
“I would like to say a huge thank you to the local employers and those further afield who have allowed our pupils to spend a week gaining valuable work experience with them and we look forward to working with you again in the future”
