Last Friday, 120 girls from South Ribble, Preston and Chorley schools took part in the SPAR Lancashire School Games, Girls Active Festival held at West View Leisure Centre.

The day began with a motivational speech from World and British Champion Inline Skater, Jenna Downing, who spoke of her struggles to take part in a very male dominated sport at the age of 8.

Through sheer resilience, intrinsic motivation and love of the sport she overcame all the stigma of a female taking part in inline skating and triumphed as World and British Champion by the age of 21.

This inspired the girls to take part in the day's events, promoting the involvement in different sports, to help increase confidence and self-esteem and to try something new.

The activities included climbing and bouldering, spinning, dance, kin ball and inline skating.

Girls PE Teacher, Miss Beesley, said, "I am very proud of what the girls have achieved on the day, their effort and enthusiasm throughout the event was outstanding.  They stepped out of their comfort zones, attempted new skills and sports that they haven't done before and really encouraged and supported each other especially through the climbing events - well done!"
