Meet The Teacher - Mr Anjum & Miss Derbyshire
16 May 2025
This is the next in a series of articles where we get to know our trainee teachers. Trainee teachers attend two placements in the academic year so are with us either from September to Christmas or January to June. They initially observe then start to take over sections of lessons, leading to being in charge of several classes by the time they finish their placement with us. Along with assignments and studies in pedagogy, they work towards their Post Graduate Certificate in Education and Qualified Teacher Status by the end of the summer term.
This week we interviewed two trainee teachers who have been taken under the wings of the PE department.
Meet The Teacher - Mr Anjum & Miss Derbyshire
What made you want to become a teacher?
Mr Anjum - My PE teacher at Witton Park Academy, Mr Hatton, was a massive inspiration to me. He had a big impact on my life. Mr Hatton was my PE teacher, my GCSE teacher and also my Head of Year so he was extremely influential for me. He inspired me and I want to pass on my love of sport to the next generation. I am a big Manchester United fan and I play handball and cricket.
I went to Blackburn Rovers Sports College and the University of Huddersfield studying Physical Education & Sport.
Miss Derbyshire - I love sport and I want to pass that onto the pupils. I want to show how valuable sport is in your life and the kind of impact it can have.
I am from Blackburn and went to St Wilfrid’s Sixth Form and then UCLan to study Sport & Exercise Science.
What do you like about your placement at Priory?
Mr Anjum - The team around me are supportive and there is a strong relationship with the pupils.
Miss Derbyshire - The wide variety of abilities in all the pupils and how much the teachers here want to instil a love of sport in the pupils.
What's the hardest thing about your job?
Mr Anjum - For a PE teacher, the late finishes with matches and extra-curricular clubs.
Miss Derbyshire - Some pupils do not want to do sport so it’s about trying to bring out their potential as, once they have a go and find out what they like, a lot of pupils do enjoy it.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Mr Anjum - I am sports-mad so I schedule my life so I can watch Manchester United!
Miss Derbyshire - I play semi-professional football for Chorley.
