Record podium wins for Priory's athletes at Stanley Park event
26 June 2023
The sun was shining down on our Priory athletes at the annual South Ribble Athletics competition held at Stanley Park, Blackpool.
We got off to a slow but steady start, gradually picking up speed with Year 8 Taylor K and Year 9 Jane W kicking off podium proceedings both finishing in 3rd for the 1500m This was shortly followed by Year 7 Excellence I with a second place in the 800m battle.
After the long distance events commenced it was time for the sprints.
Not only was the weather hotting up, but so were the heats, with a record 6 out 6 Priory pupils making it into the finals for the 100m for each year group and each gender.
As the finals began, the medal tally was speedily increasing with a fantastic trio of second places from Isaac S, Felix D and Solange P and a very respectable 3rd place from Lewis W. There was no stopping Isaac who doubled his medal count with a 3rd place in the 200m finals.
However it was Year 7 Oliver C who literally destroyed the field on the 300m, winning by a huge margin against his competitors, taking gold!
Over on the field events, the success continued for Year 9 with Ruby E standing strong for the girls in the gold medal position with a fantastic distance of over 22m in the discus. Ronnie P sailed to 2nd place in the long jump, with team mates Ben T and Xander C receiving bronze in the javelin and discus respectively.
In Year 8, Taejuan S jumped to victory in the triple jump, Josh K finished in 3rd in long jump and to top the day off in style with double success was Anees U-R with 2nd place in the javelin and 1st in the discus, throwing over 28m.
The relays as always provide an exciting end to the track events, both the girls and the boys teams ran some fantastic heats, however it was the Year 9 boys who battled it out for podium positions with an extremely close race, finishing in 3rd.
The overall results were then announced:
Year 7 boys - 4th Year 7 girls - 7th
Year 8 boys - 4th Year 8 girls - 10th
Year 9 boys - 4th Year 9 girls - 7th
Overall: Year 7 - 4th, Year 8 - 5th, Year 9 - 4th
Resulting in an overall 4th position from Priory against all eleven South Ribble schools.
We would like to thank all students who represented Priory last week. We are very proud of the efforts they made in their individual events and the team relays which produced our most successful tally of 18 podium positions, which I am sure you can agree is an amazing result all round.
PE teacher, Miss Beesley said, "They demonstrated resilience through the tough weather conditions and supported each other with great teamwork and sportsmanship - well done!"
