Computer Science Pupils Keep Robots at Arms Length

Mrs Qadri loves giving her Year 10 Computer Science pupils a challenge – and this year it’s been to build Robot Arms.
Over the years, Head of ICT & Computing Mrs Qadri, has given her pupils various tasks, including building and programming cars as well as rebuilding computers. This year her pupils are building Robot Arms to help with their programming skills as an additional extra to their class.
“They have enjoyed the challenge,” said Mrs Qadri. “They programmed them to play Jenga which was fun! Some pupils have been more successful than others, it’s great to see how eager some pupils are to do it, but they have all had a go.“
Nathan said: “I wanted to build the Robot Arms as quickly as I could so I came in at lunch-time and break-times and I finished it in a week.
"I enjoyed it – it’s something I looked forward to and it’s fun.
“I build remote controlled cars with my dad so it is something I do in my spare time.”
Issac said: “It’s quite difficult to do but it’s a nice challenge. I have been working with a group and we have had a few setbacks but you learn from them!”
Megan added: “I have been working on my own and it took me around two weeks to build my Robot Arm although I have had a snapped wire and it was taken apart at Open Evening so I am rebuilding it.
“I have learnt a lot about programming from doing this and I would like to do something with STEM in the future.”
