On Friday, 3 May we will once again be celebrating Culture Day.

At Penwortham Priory Academy we pride ourselves on our diversity and vast cultural community. In our school this academic year, we have on average 15 different ethnicities and over 20 different languages spoken!

Having a day to celebrate our culture is something that has been requested by many of our pupils and we agree that it is extremely important for children to be proud of their identities, faiths and cultures, but also to share their background with their peers.

On Friday then, students are invited to come to school dressed in clothing that reflects either their own particular culture, represents their special country’s flag or embodies a national team kit, such as rugby, hockey or football.

If they do wish to wear their own clothes for the day, then we ask that you make a donation of £1 via SCOPay.  Money raised will go to the Red Cross and Friends of Mulanje Orphans (Malawi).

There will be a food sale at break/lunchtime in the Auditorio on the same day where students can buy many different foods from other cultures. In addition, students may bring in their own cultural food (this can be homemade or store bought) that can be shared amongst their classmates. In this case, we also ask that you provide the school with a list of ingredients in the food so that they can ensure that children with any allergies or dietary requirements are safe to eat it.

On this day, students will be also be talking about their culture with their classmates, doing lots of activities to celebrate their identity, learning basic sayings in each other’s languages and listening to music from around the world. There will be a quiz in Learning for Life and each department will have a short presentation highlighting famous people from various cultures that relate to their subjects.

Throughout the week, Henna painting will also be taking place at break and lunchtime in the Auditorio. Permission letters for this activity can be obtained from the school office and the cost for this is £2 (cash only).

Mrs Cowell will also be running one of her cookery workshops on Tuesday evening where pupils will be making Greek cheese pies (booking essential).

On Thursday, Year 10 pupils studying GCSE, along with Year 9 pupils that have opted for the subject, will visit Preston's Gujarat Hindu Temple for a guided tour of the prayer hall and the building, followed by a short question and answer session.  This is a great opportunity for them to enhance their subject knowledge by learning about the Hindu faith and culture.

During Learning for Life, a trustee from one of the Culture Day beneficiaries, Friends of Mulanje Orphans (Malawi), will deliver an online assembly to talk about how the money we will be used.  We have worked with this charity previously, donating decommissioned laptops which are currently in use in Malawi.

We are very excited to celebrate our cultures at Penwortham Priory Academy and are sure that the students will have a fantastic day.
