Year 9 Pupils Get a Glimpse of the Future in AI Workshop
21 May 2025
Year 9 pupils who have chosen to study ICT or Business for their Options have had the exciting opportunity to dive into the world of Artificial Intelligence.
The hands-on workshop, led by Imole Ajayi from Loughborough University, was both engaging and educational, and offered pupils a glimpse into how AI is shaping our world—and how they can be part of that future.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the ‘Intelligent Piece of Paper’ activity. In this clever exercise, students played a game of noughts and crosses (tic-tac-toe) against what appeared to be a simple sheet of paper. However, this paper was ‘programmed’ with a set of rules that mimicked the decision-making process of a computer. It was a fun and interactive way to understand how algorithms can simulate intelligence—even without a screen!
The workshop also explored the creative side of AI. Students were introduced to Craiyon.com, a website that uses AI to generate images from text prompts. They experimented with different descriptions and watched as the AI transformed their words into unique digital artwork. This sparked discussions about how AI learns to interpret language and visuals, and the implications for art, design, and media.
“Imole guided students through these activities with enthusiasm and clarity, making complex concepts accessible and inspiring curiosity about the possibilities of AI,” said Mrs Qadri, Head of ICT & Computing.
“The workshop left students not only more informed but also more excited about the role they can play in the future of technology.”
Stay tuned for more innovative workshops like this one!
